"I'M BUYING LUNCH"
(My Facebook post yesterday)
So I’m at Wood and Iron on Huguenot today-
I have my IPad open catching up on political news, one eye on the Master’s playing on a tv set, finishing up a salad.
I have a credit card out ready to hand to the waitress as she’s bringing the check when someone comes up and says “are you Bob Holsworth?”
I say yes, he grabs the check, informs the waitress that he’s buying lunch, that I taught him Political Science in 1987, and that he keeps up with current events to this day because of the class almost 40 years ago.
I tell him that he really doesn’t need to buy lunch, but he waves me off and repeats that he’s buying.
We talk for a few minutes about what’s happening in the world and about the legislation that Abigail Spanberger is signing. He tells me about his son who went to VMI and is friends with a young woman in the military who is the daughter of another former student who was a colleague of his in Chesterfield County.
As he’s leaving, he thanks me again for the class.
Buying lunch was truly generous.
But reminding me why I loved teaching was priceless.

My family used to love Wood and Iron (we lived right around the corner). And I love this post!
